Gear Tested and Reviewed: Packing Light for a Lake Geneva Road Trip
We skipped the hotel and booked a VRBO. That gave us more room to spread out, but it also meant no front desk, no guaranteed outlets where we wanted them, and an unfamiliar house to settle into. It was a good real-world test for six products I wanted to check against my own standards before recommending them.
The SleepWave Bluetooth pillow speaker with built-in white noises solved that. It is remarkably thin, so it packs flat and slides right under the pillow. I started a podcast, and I was out in no time. My wife couldn't hear a thing! For light packers who sleep poorly away from home, a pillow speaker takes up almost no space and does a job that bulky speakers and earbuds can't do as comfortably. It's got a few built-in white noises, but I didn't care for those sounds, and would rather listen to my own relaxing music or white noise playlist.

Because it kept the phone in a fixed, visible spot, I could follow directions and glance at notifications without picking the phone up. I kept it in the car, but could see it being used on a tabletop or bathroom counter while getting ready in the morning!

The RFID-blocking technology is there to guard against card skimming, which can be a real worry when you're traveling. Wisconsin felt relatively safe, but it's nice to have the protection built in without adding any bulk.

It is small enough to forget it's in your bag until you need it, which is exactly what you want from a travel security item. I did pack a small suitcase, and think I'll just leave this in one of the pouches so it comes with me on every trip from here on out!

One important note: you need an adapter that delivers at least 15W to get effective charging from a station like this. I happened to have a high-power AC adapter with me, so it performed well. The best part for a packed car was how small it gets. It folds up into next to nothing.

I don't usually buy souvenirs, but driving made it easy to take one back. Having a vacuum on hand made me never worry about messes to clean up!

Packing Light for a Lake Geneva Road Trip: Gear I Tested
When you road trip with a wife, a baby, and a dog, the car fills up fast. Stroller, diaper bag, dog gear, groceries, and suddenly the trunk is a puzzle. For our long weekend in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, space was the most limited resource we had, so every item I brought had to be small and useful! We skipped the hotel and booked a VRBO. That gave us more room to spread out, but it also meant no front desk, no guaranteed outlets where we wanted them, and an unfamiliar house to settle into. It was a good real-world test for six products I wanted to check against my own standards before recommending them.
Sleeping Better in an Unfamiliar Bed
I have trouble sleeping in beds that aren't mine. Listening to a podcast helps me drift off, but playing it out loud isn't an option when someone is sleeping next to you.The SleepWave Bluetooth pillow speaker with built-in white noises solved that. It is remarkably thin, so it packs flat and slides right under the pillow. I started a podcast, and I was out in no time. My wife couldn't hear a thing! A Phone Mount That Actually Stays Put
The drive to Lake Geneva took about three hours, which is plenty of time to find out whether a phone mount is any good. I used the 360 magnetic phone mount for vehicles and tabletops, and the hold was the best I've seen, both on the phone and on the dashboard! Even with constant road vibration - the suction cup never loosened or slipped.Because it kept the phone in a fixed, visible spot, I could follow directions and glance at notifications without picking the phone up. I kept it in the car, but could see it being used on a tabletop or bathroom counter while getting ready in the morning!

A Slim Wallet That Doesn't Bulge
It had been a while since I replaced my wallet. The slim minimalist leather wallet with RFID protection in vintage brown was a good reason to. I carried it in my back pocket like always, but I never felt that wallet bulge when I sat down in the car. It's slim enough that a front pocket would work just as well. The RFID-blocking technology is there to guard against card skimming, which can be a real worry when you're traveling. Wisconsin felt relatively safe, but it's nice to have the protection built in without adding any bulk.

Extra Peace of Mind on the Front Door
I still had a sample of the Quick Jam portable door lock travel security door blocker from earlier testing, so I tried it on the front door of the rental. It worked great. The house already had a deadbolt, but the Quick Jam added one more physical barrier of protection, and while it looks confusing the first time you try it -- it is a piece of cake after that! Charging Apple Devices Without Packing a Pile of Cables
My wife uses an iPhone, AirPods, and an Apple Watch, and she needs all three charged. The foldable 3-in-1 charging station for iPhone, AirPods, and Apple Watch handled all of them without any trouble. It also works with my Android phone. One important note: you need an adapter that delivers at least 15W to get effective charging from a station like this. A Mini Vacuum for Mess Control
The 2-in-1 mini vacuum for car and home lives in my car year-round, so it came along by default. It's one of our best-selling gadgets on the site, and I personally use it all the time. On this vacation, we bought a small succulent as a souvenir, and it tipped over in the trunk, spilling dirt. The mini vacuum cleaned it up quickly, and the plant made it home safely.I don't usually buy souvenirs, but driving made it easy to take one back. Having a vacuum on hand made me never worry about messes to clean up!

What Packing Light Taught Me
The trip reinforced a few rules I follow when testing some of this gear:- Slim and foldable beats bulky. The pillow speaker and charging station barely took up any space, and all these little items I brought were specialized for packing light.
- Check the specs before you pack. The 15W requirement for the charging station is the kind of detail that makes or breaks performance, and if I had a bad cord or AC adapter, this would have been a poor choice.
- Test in real conditions. A three-hour drive, an unfamiliar house, a baby, and a dog show you things the showroom can't!
