Product Testing Trip: Evaluating Everyday Travel Essentials During a Weekend Stay at a Lakeside Rental
As part of our ongoing product evaluation process at PulseTV, I recently took a weekend trip to Ottawa, Illinois (no, not the one in Canada!) to test several products in a real-world travel environment.
Rather than simply reviewing products in a studio, I believe the best way to evaluate travel gear is to use it during an actual trip where unexpected situations and everyday inconveniences naturally arise.
Juggling Electronics and Hunting for Outlets
For this trip, my family stayed at a VRBO rental instead of a hotel. Vacation rentals often provide a different experience than traditional hotels, making them a great environment to evaluate products designed to make travel easier and more convenient. With an infant, our dog, and multiple electronic devices coming along, it was an excellent opportunity to determine which products genuinely improved the travel experience and which features mattered most in everyday use!
One product that immediately proved useful was the 10,000mAh Multi-Device Power Bank with Built-In Cords. Every rental property is different, and I never know where electrical outlets will be located or whether enough outlets will be available for everyone to charge their devices.
Having a compact power bank with integrated charging cables meant I wasn't tied to a wall outlet whenever my phone needed a boost. The built-in cords also eliminated the need to pack multiple charging cables, making it one of the most convenient travel accessories I brought.

Inflating Our Baby’s Seat On Our Trip
Traveling with our infant also gave me an opportunity to evaluate the Powerful Compact Rechargeable Air Pump. We packed an inflatable infant seat that would have been cumbersome to inflate manually every time we needed it.The air pump packed away in very little space and quickly inflated the seat whenever we needed it. This was my first trip using it in a real travel scenario, and it confirmed that the compact size makes it practical for vacations where luggage space is limited.

The Sound Machine That Saved Our Sleep
One travel item I refuse to leave home without is a quality sound machine. During this trip I tested the Ultimate Sound Machine Wireless Bluetooth Speaker, and it has quickly become my new favorite.First of all, the quality of the noises is top notch - the effects all sound like hi-fi recordings and don't have obvious looping stutters that cheaper models can have. Plus there's a wide variety of built-in white noise and ambient sound options that help create a consistent sleeping environment for our baby despite being away from home.
We also like it in case noisy neighbors can be heard through thin walls - we usually stick to a static sound or ocean waves. Once everyone was awake, it easily switched over to Bluetooth speaker mode for playing music from my phone around the rental.
Combining two products into one compact device helped reduce the number of items we needed to pack for our trip, and the battery life lasted a full 2 days!

Keeping the Car Cool in the Scorching Sun
Because our VRBO did not include a garage, our vehicle spent most of the day parked in direct sunlight. This gave me a perfect opportunity to evaluate the Car Windshield Umbrella Buddy Pop-Up Sunshade. It deployed much faster than traditional folding sunshades and noticeably reduced the amount of heat inside the vehicle when we returned after spending time exploring. It also helped protect the dashboard from prolonged sun exposure during the trip – really impressive when there was NO shade during the weekend.

A Good Cord is Invaluable on My Travels
Charging multiple devices while driving is always a challenge, especially when different phones use different connectors. Throughout the drive I tested the Upgraded 6-Foot Braided Multi-Charging Cable, which includes USB-C and Lightning connectors. My wife uses an older iPhone with a Lightning connection while my Android phone uses USB-C, allowing both of us to charge using a single cable. The ability to power multiple devices from one cable significantly reduced clutter inside the vehicle and simplified charging during the drive.
I like this one since it ditches the lesser used Micro-USB in favor of an additional USB-C. This will be the connector that my wife gets next since it's the most commonly used type nowadays, so it's a great transition accessory for families with multiple devices.

Walking Our Dog Hands-Free
Since our dog joined us on the trip, I also evaluated the Retractable Dog Leash Mobile Kit during several walks around the lake and nearby parks. The hands-free waist strap worked especially well while pushing a stroller, allowing me to comfortably manage both the dog and the stroller without constantly switching hands.Beyond the convenience, the leash itself felt exceptionally well built, with smooth operation and sturdy construction that stood out compared to many retractable leashes I've used in the past. It even came with some waste bags and a water dish we used in the house. That water dish folded up like origami; very small and took up no room compared to a full-sized bowl!

Field Testing PulseTV’s Products While Traveling
One of the things I enjoy most about product testing is seeing how products perform outside of a studio. It's easy for something to look great in a controlled environment, but a real trip quickly shows whether it's actually useful when you're juggling:- Luggage
- Kids
- Pets
- Devices
- And everything else that comes with traveling.
Those real-life experiences help me figure out which products are genuinely worth recommending and which ones still need improvement.
Overall, this trip was a great opportunity to put several travel products through their paces in everyday situations. From keeping our devices charged and the car cooler to making walks with the dog and stroller easier, each product proved its value in a practical way.
Experiences like these help ensure that when PulseTV recommends a product, it's because we've actually used it ourselves and know it performs when it matters!
