The Don't (Dont) Tread On Me flag was the flag of the American Colonies at the time of the American Revolution against England.

The coiled rattlesnake, ready to strike, was used in early American history as a symbol of resistance against British rule.

Gadsden's flag:
First flown aboard one of the first ships in the United States Navy, the Alfred, on January 4th, 1776 making it the oldest recorded flag of the United States.

It is called the "Gadsden Flag" after the designer, Colonel Christopher Gadsden who presented it to the Commodore of the new U.S. Navy, Esek Hopkins. Thus the flag is also sometimes called the "Hopkins Flag".

Modern Use:
Since the first Patriot Day on September 11, 2002 the flag is also shown on the US Army's Drill Sergeant Identification Badge and it flies at the bow of American warships today.

Missing Apostrophe:
During the 18th century, when contractions were coming into widespread use, they were often written without an apostrophe. The standard form for the contraction of "do not" later came to include the apostrophe.
